Raphael Gabrio: Altered State

Let’s spend some time with Raphael Gabrio and his insane visions….

How did you get your first paying art job?
I got my first paying art job from a local band were I live in Rio de Janeiro, was a very cool experience for me on that time.. I was actually getting to know more about the working process and all. Very fun!

Have you always worked in your current style and if not how did you work before?
Basically yes, throughout the years I manage to evolve on my own style.. making the most realistic shit as possible.. nowadays I kind of fuse Imagery with illustration.. witch I like alot, it’s always great to see how the art turns out with the impact and all. But in the future I’ll probably direct my art knowing for paiting.. I love the organic feel of it!

Who are your artistic influences?
Pretty complex question, I love all kind of art.. but what gets me most is H.R. Giger, Vincent Castiglia, Laurie Lipton, Halsey Swain, Dan Seagrave and Michal “Xaay” Loranc ( this guy knows what im talking about!).. tattoo artists also inspire me alot, Edu Nascimentto, Victor Portugal, Eric De L’etoile! these guys are my top influences for sure.

Tell us about your studio space?
The studio stands part of my home actually.. sometimes it’s not cool to have your work at home but most of it is ok.. just deal with it.

Take us through a typical day.
wake up, do some teeth brushing, turn on some sick music ( PLEASE! ) and get to the email box, after that I just roll up a joint to get my mindworking, practice some Forceps songs ( yeah that’s my band ) and then im ready for work, basically.

How do you create your work? Take us through the process from concept to final.
I guess drawing was always the thing for me since I was a kid so taking that from the begining of any art is something that I really appreciate doing. I usualy make a drawing sketch on paper with the idea im up to or the idea that is sent for me to work on, after that I start building the concept on photoshop, go for some paitings ( digitally) which is were it ends, the final process is pretty fun to do too.. I always leave the shadings and lights for the final touch.

What materials do you use? How much if any is done on the computer?
Pencil, paper, tablet, weed, computer and my brain. all my art till now is done using pc, I use Photoshop, Adobe Ilustrator and very very less corel cause I really hate this program.. but sometimes a man has to do his work..

Do you use reference materials or does all of it come from your head?
Sometimes I use references, it really depends on what type of concept im working on… but most of my art concepts comes from my head.

Do the bands give you any direction?
I wish, would be easier to work haha ( just jocking) but I can’t conplain.. it’s fun doing what I do and when a band hit me up with their own direction it’s cool too.. I work in both ways pretty well.

Do you listen the band’s music when you work on their project?
Only if I enjoy their music yes, I think im pretty lucky to have worked with a few bands that I really like listening too, but honestly I just listen to whatever I feel like while working, sometimes I like to work with no music it all.. just me and the “blaze”, but mostly I listen to music while im working.

Do you have an advice for artist’s who wish to do artwork for bands?
Be patient that’s all.

What are you currently working on?
Right now im currently working on a new Kreator merch design, new Job For a cowboy and Cephalic Carnage merch design and New Lock up merch design, Im also working on a Cover art for Gutfucked ( this band is seriously heavy ) can’t wait to finish it, Soreption and Ayin. Yeah, pretty busy lately..

Have you ever turned down a project?
Yeah, and it’s stressful as fuck.. this job is not an easy job to do.. you really gotta keep up, doing art takes alot of guts and turning down a project is definitely not a good thing, you loose time and money and most of it your mind. in those cases I just hit some weed and start working on another project.

Do you have any dream projects?
Hell yeah I do, Im right now designing a concept art direct for Cannibal Corpse I really wish I make up to them.. let’s see how it goes.. but my top dream is to do a cover art for Decapitated, they are my top favorite band and since I started doing this I always had that in mind, sent them a few emails but with no luck haha, I’ll guess the time will come.

What are your favorite bands of all time and what bands are you listening to right now?
Favorite band of all time is “old” Decapitated. They showed me how brutal and solid a death metal band could be.
Also my favorites of all time I got to mention is Sepultura early 90′s, Suffocation, Death, Gorgasm, in all im really fan of old school tight stuff!
I’ve been listening alot Bohren & Der Club Of Gore and The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble.
Today I was shredding some Impaled, Sarcophagy, Inhume and Terrorizer.
Any advice for artists that want to work with bands?

Any advice for artists that want to work with bands?
