The first induction into the Album Cover Hall of Fame for Metal Band Art is the legendary Sabbath Bloody Sabbath cover by Drew Struzan. For those of you who do not know who Drew Struzan is, then you must have not lived through the 80’s. He is probably one of the greatest movie poster artists of all time. He has done artwork for: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Blade Runner & recently the Hellboy movies.
The concept for the artwork came from Ernie Cefalu. Ernie Cefalu was the founder of Pacific Eye & Ear, a design house that did covers for tons of 70′s albums.
Ernie has stated that: “My concept for this album was based on two color illustrations that were given to me on my confirmation day in 1955, that I still have to this day. They are from the 1700’s and depict an evil man and a good man both at the split second of their death. When I showed them to Drew and explained the idea – well these pieces speak for themselves.”
Below are the original pieces as well as the final version of the album art. One of the most influential metal bands of all time, may have one of the most influential covers of all time as well. Is this the greatest Metal cover ever? A skull, a snake, naked chicks and 666…What could be better?
